The Ritual

Care for the leather, and it will carry you for years.

A hand-welted shoe is not finished on the day it's made — it's finished a little more with every polish. Set aside twenty unhurried minutes, and let the ritual begin.

Nine Unhurried Steps

The making never really ends.

Follow them in order the first time. Soon you'll know the rhythm by heart.

I Unlace the shoe — Melodia Pelle leather care step one

Step One

Unlace

Remove the laces and set them aside so no polish finds them. With the shoe open, you can reach the tongue and eyelets the way the leather deserves.

II Insert cedar shoe trees — leather care step two

Step Two

Insert the shoe trees

Slide in cedar trees to draw the leather taut and give yourself a smooth, even surface to work across. Take a moment to look the pair over for scuffs and grime.

III Dust off loose dirt with horsehair brush — leather care step three

Step Three

Dust it off

Sweep the whole shoe with the large horsehair brush to lift loose dirt. Switch to the small brush for the welt, the broguing and the seams where dust likes to gather.

IV Clean the leather with cleaner and cloth — leather care step four

Step Four

Clean the leather

Work a little cleaner into a cloth and pass it evenly over the surface. This lifts old polish and grime, and opens the pores so the cream can be drawn deep into the grain.

V Condition with shoe cream in circular motions — leather care step five

Step Five

Condition with cream

Using a fresh cloth, apply shoe cream in small circular motions until the whole shoe is covered. Let the leather drink it in — this is what keeps it supple and alive.

VI Work the cream in with brisk brush strokes — leather care step six

Step Six

Work it in

Brisk strokes with the horsehair brush create warmth and friction, driving the cream into the pores. Reach for the small brush around the sole and the tighter corners.

VII Seal the finish with wax polish — leather care step seven

Step Seven

Seal with polish

Lay wax over the leather in thin layers to seal in the cream and protect the finish. Build a little extra at the toe and heel, where a deeper shine loves to sit.

VIII Buff the shine with a polishing glove — leather care step eight

Step Eight

Buff the shine

With the polishing glove or a soft cloth, buff in circles until the gloss rises to the finish you want. A drop of water on the cloth at the very end deepens the mirror.

IX Let the pair rest on shoe trees — leather care step nine

Step Nine

Let it rest

Leave the pair on its trees for a day before wearing so the polish settles and the leather recovers its shape. Rotate your pairs, and each one will outlast the last.

How Often

Small habits, a longer life.

After each wear

A quick sweep with the horsehair brush and a full day on the shoe trees. Thirty seconds that add years.

Every few weeks

A light condition and buff to keep the leather fed and the shine even, especially through dry or rainy spells.

Once a month

The full ritual, start to finish. This is the care that builds the patina you'll be proud of.
